How to use the leenk.me Facebook plugin for WordPress

The Basics…

Customizing your Facebook post with leenk.me…

The anatomy of a Facebook post…

Default Facebook Settings

Publish to Personal Profile – Check this box if you want leenk.me to publish new posts to your Facebook Profile.

Publish to Fan Page – Check this box if you want leenk.me to publish new posts to your Facebook Fan Page.

Default Message – You can use this option to set a default message or format that will be sent to Facebook whenever you publish a new post. You can use the %TITLE%, %WPSITENAME%, or %WPTAGLINE% format options.

Default Link Name - You can use this option to set a default link name or format that will be sent to Facebook whenever you publish a new post. You can use the %TITLE%, %WPSITENAME%, or %WPTAGLINE% format options.

Default Caption - You can use this option to set a default caption or format that will be sent to Facebook whenever you publish a new post. You can use the %TITLE%, %WPSITENAME%, or %WPTAGLINE% format options.

Default Image URL - Each Facebook post has an image attached to it, you can use this to specify a default image to use. You must be careful to not use a URL to an image hosted on Facebook. Facebook will reject this message if you do.

Default Image URL: <blank> — will use a blank 90×90 pixel image hosted by leenk.me
Example Default Image URL: http://leenk.me/example.png

Publish Categories – Select which categories to include or exclude from Facebook.

Default Publish Categories: Include All Categories

Publish All Authors – The leenk.me plugin suite allows you to take advantage of multiple authors on your WordPress website. Each author can setup a leenk.me account and insert their leenk.me API key into the plugin. If you have multiple authors publishing to your WordPress website then you will wan to have this box checked to ensure that your Facebook post get sent properly.

P0st Specific Settings

Custom Message - You can use this option to customize the message that gets sent to Facebook. You can use the %TITLE%, %WPSITENAME%, or %WPTAGLINE% format options.

Custom Link Name - You can use this option to customize the link name that gets sent to Facebook. You can use the %TITLE%, %WPSITENAME%, or %WPTAGLINE% format options.

Image URL – The Default Image URL (mentioned above) can be modified in two ways. If your theme supports Featured Images you can add a new image to your post an mark it as the Featured Image. The leenk.me plugin will then automatically use that image URL for Facebook. If your theme does not support Featured Images, then you can simply add the URL to the image you want o use in the Image URL box.

Exclude from Profile – Check this box if you wish to exclude posting this specific post from your Facebook Profile.

Exclude from Page – Check this box if you wish to exclude posting this specific post from your Facebook Fan Page.

I cant get it to work it asked me to alow but no account showed up, I have removed and tryed again many times, it dont ask me to allow and no facebook accounts are listed

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Carl,

Can you try to do it in a different browser? For some reason, some people have this similar problem and I haven’t been able to track it down. The only solution that has worked is for them to simply try a different browser when connecting their account.

Let me know if that doesn’t help.

  2. I have been using leenkme for a while to link to facebook and everything has been ok. I’ve just tried to publish a new post and I’m getting this error message:
503: error publishing to profile: facebook Api unavailable. The post is up ok on my site but there is no link on facebook, what to I do…?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Alison,

Facebook is reporting back this error: Error validating access token.

Did you recently change your Facebook password? There is a bug in the Facebook oAuth mechanism that deauthorizes all third party access tokens whenever someone changes their Facebook password. The Facebook developers know about it and are supposedly working on it. In the mean time there is a simple fix… simply log into your leenk.me account here: http://leenk.me/ and click the “un-leenk your Facebook account” link. Once it has been “un-leenked” reconnect leenk.me to your Facebook account. This should put everything in working order.

Let me know if that doesn’t help.

  3. Paul says:

Great plugin. Thanks for the work. Is there a way that I can use a default setting that will keep leenk.me from sending every post to my feeds? I’d rather have the plugin activated but then be able to choose specific posts to be sent to facebook, twitter, etc.

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Paul,

Add this code to your themes functions.php:

      remove_action( 'new_to_publish', 'leenkme_connect', 20 );
      remove_action( 'draft_to_publish', 'leenkme_connect', 20 );
      remove_action( 'pending_to_publish', 'leenkme_connect', 20 );
      remove_action( 'future_to_publish', 'leenkme_connect', 20 );

It should disable the automatic publishing to your social networks.

  4. Elissa says:

    Hi Lew:

I’m having some difficulty getting the plugin to work – the problem seems to be in “leenking” to the desired Facebook page in my leenk.me account settings (and yes, I’ve tried it in different browsers (IE 8, FF 3.6 and Chrome 12.0.7 as suggested at the top, so this isn’t the problem).

The “leenking” process itself seems to go smoothly enough: When I click on the “connect” button I get the FB login page… and when I log in, I’m returned to my account settings page and I can see the message: “Your Facebook profile has been leenk’d.” Problem is, there’s no avatar or list of pages to choose; and when I try to publish a test message, I get this error message:

“412: Error: Please log in to leenk.me to verify you have leenk’ed your Facebook account.”

What am I doing wrong? FWIW, I initially leenked to my personal profile; then unleenked, logged out of my FB acct., and re-linked to the actual page/FB account I wanted. While I can’t think of why this would affect things, figured I’d mention it. Also: I’m using the latest version of WP (just upgraded last week) – could this be an issue?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Elissa,

leenk.me is not designed to do “page only” accounts. What you should do is re-leenk your Facebook profile and make sure your profile is set as an administrator of your Facebook page. Then just make sure that the plugin is setup to publish to your fan page only.

Let me know if that doesn’t make sense.
      Lew

  5. Victor says:

    Hi Lew,

I’ve installed leenk on a WordPress MU setup. Only one blog has got leenk activated to post on to Facebook. Also the plugin is not Network activated.

The problem is that the post links are being posted on to my Facebook personal profile. I’ve turned off “Publish to Personal Profile” setting and only allowed publishing to the fan page. But the posts still show up on my personal wall.

Publishing a leenk test message, however, works perfectly fine. What could be the problem?

  6. JOE KLEIN says:

Hi, how do i leave everything custom (to pull from the post) except for the link name, or the message.
i tried just putting text in the custom message field, and it didnt put it into the post
    thanks

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Joe,

Was the a previously published post or a new post? If it was previously published, you need to click the “Update” button on the post before hitting the RePublish button, otherwise it won’t get the new settings.

      Lew

  7. John Gallagher says:

    Hi,
Installed everything and linked all sites. Now I get “ERROR: Unknown error, please try again. If this continues to fail, contact leenk.me support.” when trying to post tests.

Tried all browsers and reloaded all info but still no good, Any help ?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi John,

Is this only for the Facebook publishing? It sounds like you may have multiple authors/users on your website. Go to the Facebook settings for the plugin and make sure you have “Publish All Authors?” checked. Then try again. If that doesn’t work let me know via the contact form.

      Thank you.
      Lew

  8. Sarah Rausch says:

    Hi Lew,

Is there any way to turn off the comment option on a post? I’ve turned off all comment capabilities through Facebook, but it’s still appearing every time I post a blog and it “leenks” to my Facebook page. I hope that make sense!

    Thanks!

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Sarah,

Just to be clear, you’re wanting to disable comments on the Facebook update for every WordPress post published through leenk.me?

      Thanks.
      Lew

      • Sarah Rausch says:

        That is correct!

        • Lew Ayotte says:

I’m not sure that this is possible. But I didn’t know you could set any posts to not be able to have comments. Can you tell me how you do that?

By the way, is this on a Facebook page or profile?

          Lew

          • Sarah Rausch says:

            Alright, thanks anyway!

Yes you can, on a personal page or a fan page. If you are wanting to do that to a fan page, you need to go to edit page > manage permissions > and under Posting Ability, uncheck “users can write or post content on the wall.” You can also disable the ability for fans to post pictures/add tags/add videos. If you are wanting to do that to your personal page you need to go to Privacy Settings > How You Connect—Edit Settings > and change who can post to your wall.

            Hope that helped!
            Sarah

  9. Lew Ayotte says:

    Sarah,

I was messing around with “Users can write or post content on the wall” on one of my development pages and it didn’t prevent one of my friends from commenting, only posting a new status. That was a regular status update. I wonder why mine is different.

Thanks for sharing the tip though, good to know, hopefully Facebook fixes it soon.

    Lew

  10. Kelly Snyder says:

    Hi Lew –

I installed and everything works great, however when I post to Facebook and type in a custom message leenk.me won’t pull it in. It only pulls the post headline. Any advice?

  11. Marci Y. says:

    Hi,

I am new to WordPress and I have set up my Leenk.me account and everything and it pulls my feeds to my social profiles great but when I go to republish a post to Facebook, it gives me this error—503: Error Publishing to your Fan Page: Facebook API unavailable. If this continues please contact support@leenk.me.

I haven’t changed my password recently either. Any advice?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Marci,

I just checked the logs and Facebook is reporting back this error for you: “Error validating access token: Session has expired at unix time 0. The current unix time is 1334616462.”

I’m not exactly sure what that means, I’ve never seen it before. The first step would be to log into your leenk.me account and ‘un-leenk’ your Facebook account, then reconnect it. If it doesn’t work after that, let me know.

      Thank you.

      • Marci Ybarra says:

Now, I am only getting it every now and then when I try to use the republish feature.

        • Lew Ayotte says:

          Hi Marci,

It looks like a bug on Facebook’s end. Someone else was reporting this error a week ago. I’ve reported your case to the Facebook developers. If you’re interested you can see the initial bug report here: https://developers.facebook.com/bugs/325053307551129/?browse=search_4f69312855a405d84394839

Sorry about this, hopefully Facebook will fix it soon.

          • Tash Hughes says:

            Hi Lew,
Did you ever get a solution for that time out error?
Leenk.me works perfectly for twitter & linked in (and everything on my other site) but if I do a test facebook update I get a message:
Facebook Page: Facebook Error Received: Error validating access token: Session has expired at unix time 1340544876. The current unix time is 1351577001.
And no posts are ging to my wall.

I have just swapped to a joint account so tried with a new API and it didn’t help.
I love this plugin so woudl love to fix this up.
            Thanks,
            Tash

          • Lew Ayotte says:

Hi Tash, the error you’re receiving is related to Facebook’s new API setup (changed in May). Basically they expire all third party access tokens every 60 days. They are now requiring users to re-authenticate their profiles to 3rd party apps like leenk.me. Simple fix, you just need to log into your account at http://leenk.me/ and remove/re-add your Facebook profile. You shouldn’t need to do anything else. If you do see this message again you’ll just need to do the same thing. Let me know if you need further assistance.

  12. Connie Veneracion says:

The posts go to my FB timeline but does not show up on my FB wall. That doesn’t make them very visible. Any way to make them show on my wall?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

Hi Connie, What you’re experiencing is a common misunderstanding. Basically Facebook changed the way items show up on your News Feed (and on your Timeline). Items that you post are not given priority in your own News Feed… sometimes they show up, sometimes they don’t. But anyone who likes your Page (or has friended you) should have the items appear in their news feed. Basically, if you want to check if the item posted, go to your Activity Log and you can see that the item posted to your account. If it did, then Facebook handles the rest however they decide is best for you. As an example, my wife uses leenk.me for her blog. When she publishes a post sometimes it will not appear on her News Feed but I’ll see her post on my News Feed.

  13. Mark Williams says:

    Hi,

I had this plugin installed and working fine on a development site, but now I am trying to reactivate it on the production domain, and I cannot seem to link to my facebook fan page.
The plug-in reports success when I send a test post to my personal profile, but if I try to send to a fan page, I cannot select which page I want to post to, and the test message returns the following error:

Facebook Page: Error: Please log in to leenk.me to verify you have leenk’ed your Facebook Page.

I have tried unlinking my facebook profile and relinking when using facebook as the fanpage ID, but nothing seems to work…

I hope you can help – the plugin was ideal for our requirements and the team loved it in testing, but now it doesn’t seem to work in the way we need.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hey Mark,

In your leenk.me account, go to “manage your API keys” and click the API key you’re trying to use. Make sure you have a page selected for that key under the Facebook settings.

  14. Steven Elsey says:

My posts to facebook don’t have a share link and I don’t have an option to ‘include share link’ as in the screenshot above.

    Any ideas?

  15. Grace says:

For some reason when I updated the plugin for WordPress, there is no longer an option to include a link to the image for publication on Facebook. How can we ensure an image is posted and shared on Facebook?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Grace,

Simply upload an image to your post and it should show you the image in the Facebook post. To specify an image, set that image as the “featured” image.

  16. Lynette says:

Since I’ve updated the new plugin I’ve lost my ability to “exclude from page”. That option is checked but it still posts to my facebook page automatically. Is this a bug with the updated version?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Lynette,

Yes, that appears to be a new bug, thanks for reporting it. Somehow I didn’t catch it before releasing the new version. I’ll get it fixed ASAP (it will be in version 2.0.2, since I just release 2.0.1 with a different bug fix).

      Lew

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Lynette,

I just submitted version 2.0.2 of the plugin which should fix this problem for you. Let me know if you have any more trouble!

  17. Christina says:

    Hi Lew,

I’m getting problem when I try to post to my FB group

Facebook Group: Facebook Error Received: (#100) link URL is not properly formatted

I did a test and it was successful. But, when I try to publish a post, I get the above.

When I try to connect to Twitter, it goes okay, but it doesn’t provide the link. Instead it adds this

    INVALID_LOGIN

after the title of the post.

I also, logged off of my FB account and re-added the FB account again to my leek.me account. Have retested several times with success notice, but it won’t publish the actual post.

Hope you can help solve this problem.

    thanks,
    Chris

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Chris,

That sounds like the bit.ly URL shortener is complaining about your credentials (or one of the other URL shorteners). In your WordPress dashboard go to the leenk.me settings and double check your URL Shortener settings.

Let me know if that doesn’t help.

      • Chris says:

        Hi Lew,
The bit.ly was set up correctly, doubled checked it. It still wouldn’t work, so I’m just using the tinyurl. No stats, but at least it works.

        Thanks again for the response!
        Chris

  18. Treanne Kidd says:

How do you change the Facebook group that is posted to once it has been set. I can’t find that option.

    Thank you,

    Barry

    • Lew Ayotte says:

Hi Barry, login to your leenk.me account and go to “manage your API keys” then click the API key you’re using to edit it. From here you should be able to change the Facebook group. If it is a new group and you do not see it in the list, you’ll probably need to remove/readd your Facebook account first. Let me know if you have any trouble.

  19. Brandi Francisko says:

Is there anyway we can add a standard coding in to our setting on WP where it will pull the Meta Custom Post Title, and description rather than the WP Site home information?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Brandi,

Yes you can, I just submitted an update to the leenk.me plugin (version 2.0.7) which now has a filter that lets you add your own custom arguments. So you could do something like this:

      function my_leenkme_custom_replacement_args( $string, $post_id ) {

      return str_ireplace( '%META_POST_TITLE%', get_post_meta( $post_id, 'meta_post_title', true ), $string );

      }
      add_filter( 'leenkme_custom_replacement_args', 'my_leenkme_custom_replacement_args', 10, 2 );

The first argument %META_POST_TITLE% represent whatever custom replacement variable you want to use. The second argument get_post_meta( $post_id, ‘meta_post_title’, true ) gets the custom post meta value from the name you have setup. You’d add this code to your theme’s functions.php file.

Let me know if that doesn’t make any sense.

  20. Jamela Porter says:

I am not able to use it at all, when posting to fb I get Expectation failed. Please contact leenk.me support for help. and for twitter it tells me to make sure I have linked the account, please help.

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Jamela,

It looks like your leenk.me API key wasn’t setup properly… but it looks like you’ve cancelled your leenk.me account too (on Fri Sep 21, 2012). Sorry for the late reply, but I’ve been out of the country for the past week on family business and did not have access to the internet. If you decide you want to reenable your leenk.me account, let me know and I can try to help you get it straightened out.

  21. Dave Spraker says:

    Lew –

What a great plug-in! So simple and straight forward compared to the others I’ve tried. Congrats. My only issue is that I can’t seem to get images to appear on FB. LinkedIn works fine but not FB and I was a little confused by the “Featured Image” description.

  22. Dave Spraker says:

Follow up question – when I set the featured image it appears twice on the main page of the of the my blog…
    http://spraker.tv/blog/

  23. Dave Spraker says:

But then if you go to the individual post, it is only show once.

    • Lew Ayotte says:

Your theme’s single.php file probably doesn’t automatically display the featured image… but one of the template files that displays the blog listing (usually index.php or home.php) does.

  24. Kristie says:

I’ve been using the plugin successfully for some time to post to a FB Group only. I changed my FB password and of course it no longer works. I’m sure this is a simple question, but how can I update the password in my plugin?

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Kristie,

This is one of the many annoying things about Facebook. As you’ve figured out, whenever you change your password, Facebook stops working… because they cancel the access token they give to leenk.me. It’s a fairly simple fix though, just log into your account here and remove/readd your Facebook profile. That should clear it up.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

  25. johnny mcelree says:

Love the plug in – but for some reason it started posting to both my personal and fan page (checked the fan page box only and now I get this reply when trying to post: Facebook Page: Facebook Error Received: (#200) This API call requires a valid app_id.

I have tried unlinking my FB account and then re-linking it. Didn’t fix the problem. Thanks for your help.

  26. johnny mcelree says:

I get this response after more fiddling around … the plug in worked great for over a year – we didn’t change anything so I’m not sure what’s happening … Expectation failed. Please contact leenk.me support for help.

  27. johnny mcelree says:

Posting OK to Facebook now – but not my Fan page – still only posts to my personal page – I have only the FAN page checked on the settings. I continue to get this error when I run a test from wordpress settings: Facebook Page: Facebook Error Received: (#200) This API call requires a valid app_id.

    • Lew Ayotte says:

      Hi Johnny,

If you go to “manage your API keys” and select the key you’re using, does it have your Facebook page selected?

      • Johnny says:

When I go to manage my API’s the pull down menu for Facebook does not have our fan page listed. And I am unable to pull down from the primary (account) facebook page to anything else. thanks for the quick response :-)

        • Lew Ayotte says:

          Hi Johnny,

It looks like it has a list of Groups for that profile. What is your Page name?

          • Johnny says:

            Fan page is HawaiiLuxuryListings

When I test now – after linking and unlinking a few times, I get that I must log into Leenk.me to confirm my account but still I can’t post to our fan page. I have the Fan Page box checked in our wordpress.

          • Lew Ayotte says:

Hi Johnny, Have you tried remove your Facebook account and then re-adding it? That should refresh the Pages for your account that leenk.me sees.

          • Johnny says:

I have unlinked from Leenk and from WordPress. Logged out of both. Came back in – re linked. Didn’t work. Tried this several times. Was working great until recently – when we noticed it was posting to our personal page vs. the fan page. I wonder why our fan page is not an option under the pulldown menu from the Manage my API area. I will keep trying.

          • Lew Ayotte says:

Weird… I will try to do it manually… hold on.

          • Lew Ayotte says:

Hey Johnny, According to Facebook… that account doesn’t have any pages associated with it. At least, not that is will show leenk.me. Try this, log into Facebook, manage the apps (https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications) and remove leenk.me. Then remove/readd your Facebook account in your leenk.me account. This should ask to get new permissions, which should request the ability to manage your pages. Let me know if that still doesn’t solve the problem. But currently, Facebook is return an empty set when leenk.me requests the pages for your account.

          • Johnny says:

Got somewhere – but failed in the end.

Deleted from FB apps – Check
            Logged into Leenk – check
Deleted and then added Facebook to Leenk – check
Went to manage API keys – LINKED correct Fan Page :-) – check
Went back to WP – unchecked FAN page – saved – check
CHECKED fan page and re-saved. Then ran a TEST and go this reply Expectation failed. Please contact leenk.me support for help.
            Yikes!

          • Johnny says:

Hi Lew … We’ve managed to re-link everything and we get a confirmation of the test – the test goes to our FAN page – check. But when we leenk from actual post – it goes to our personal FB page. We have the FAN box checked under Facebook Settings (in WP) we have tried doing and undoing it = and saving each time. But still we can only post to our personal page – nothing shows up on our FAN page. Our settings on Leenk are aok. Not sure what to try next.

          • Lew Ayotte says:

            Hi Johnny,

It looks like the tests are going to your Fan Page properly: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hawaii-Luxury-Listings/161589790519457 … did you figure it out? It sounds like you might have the same leenk.me API key setup for two different users on your site, so it’s causing a conflict. One of those users probably isn’t setup properly and the one you’re working on is, but the first one is override the settings (since they’re using the same API key). Does that make sense? If you can’t figure it out, can you send me temporary admin credentials to your site? If so, send them to support at leenk.me.

  28. Joe Koenig says:

    Hello,
My content seems to push to Twitter fine but I am not having any luck getting it to push to Facebook or Linkden. I have re-connected to both a few times with no luck.

One thing to note is that when I link to Facebook in the API it doesn’t actually bring in a name or info.. just has a blank profile to select..

    any ideas?

    thanks,
    Joe

    • Lew Ayotte says:

For some reason Facebook does this occasionally, I’ve opened up a bug report with them, but they’ve been less than helpful. Can you try this? Log into your Facebook account, go to Account settings -> Apps and delete the leenk.me App. then go to your account in http://leenk.me/ and remove/readd your Facebook account. That should completely refresh the connection between leenk.me and your Facebook account.

Let me know if that doesn’t help.

By the way, it looks like your LinkedIn account is connected… are you still having trouble with it?

I an Admin for several Admin Facebook fan pages. Is there a way I can post to one fan page – not all? I don’t see the options for flagging only one fan page.

    Thank you! Ann

      Hey Ann,

When you add your Facebook account, you’ll head on over to “manage your API keys” and then add a new API key. From here you’ll select your Profile, then you’ll be able to select the Page and/or Group that you want that API key to publish to. After that, if you only want to publish to your Fan Page, make sure you have the plugin setup in your WordPress dashboard to only publish to your Fan Page by checking “Publish to Fan Page?” and removing the checks from the other options.

I just realized that my Leenkme is not posting to my Group Facebook Wall. I do a test post into the group and this is the message I am getting:

Facebook Group: Facebook Error Received: (#100) The post’s links must direct to the application’s connect or canvas URL.

Any ideas as to how to fix this?

I keep getting the following message and Leenk me will no longer publish to facebook, can you help?

Facebook Group: Facebook Error Received: Error validating access token: Session has expired at unix time 1360010809. The current unix time is 1360940059

    • Lew Ayotte says:

Hi Phil, This is the message when Facebook expires the access token it gives to leenk.me. In May of 2012 Facebook changed how they handle 3rd party access tokens, requiring users to re-authenticate their profiles to 3rd party apps like leenk.me. Simple fix, you just need to log into your account at http://leenk.me/ and remove/re-add your Facebook profile. You shouldn’t need to do anything else. If you do see this message again (which should happen about every 60-days), you’ll just need to do the same thing.

  32. I had to change my FB password and so now how do I do this on LEENK?

  33. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I
get three emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
    Thanks a lot!

We use JetPack by Automattic for that feature… it should have a link to unsubscribe in that email. They don’t give us any options to manage the list, sorry.
